On the day of Convocation

Academic dress protocol
  • Graduates must wear their robes and caps before they enter the convocation hall.
  • The hood should be worn with the strap around the neck.
  • Neatly polished formal shoes are must at all times as there is some walking involved.

Arrival
  • The academic dress and line-up cards should be collected from the venue between 7-30 and 9 AM only.
  • After putting on your robe, you must arrive to join the line sharp at 9-30 AM along with your line-up card. If you arrive later than this, you might not be allowed to cross the stage for the formal awarding of your degree.
  • According to the number printed on your line-up card, find your place in the procession. It's important to line up in ascending order in accordance with the number on your card, as that number corresponds to the order in which degrees will be awarded.
  • Student volunteers and faculty members will be present to help you find your place and to provide assistance at the assembly points and during the ceremony.

Crossing the stage
  • Student volunteers will indicate to the graduates, row by row, when they should leave their seats.
  • Ascend the stage and give the person standing at the lectern a portion of your line-up card so that your name can be read.
  • As soon as your card is read, walk to the centre of the stage and pause in front of the
    Chief Guest.
  • Upon receiving your diploma case, the Chief Guest will shake your hand. Be prepared to shake your hands gently.
  • After leaving the stage, you will be directed back to your seat.

Conclusion of the ceremony
  • Please do not leave the venue until the ceremony is over.
  • When the proceedings have concluded, please remain standing after the national anthem until the guests on the dais has left the hall.

Additional instructions
  • It is advisable, that you take all necessary breaks, such as washroom, snacks, breakfast etc. prior to 9-30 A.M. The graduates will be lined up for the procession, which takes place at 9:30 A.M. Once you have your seat at the ceremony, you will be unable to leave until the official closing has been announced.
  • The procession to the auditorium must be a tight line at all times. Each graduate is asked to keep their POSITION in line and follow directly behind the person in front of them, as close as possible, until reaching YOUR seat at the auditorium.
  • You WILL NOT be able to leave the ceremony until it is officially closed, as per protocol. Again, ALL breaks have to be taken prior to 9-30 A.M. It is informal to leave this prestigious event in the middle. When the closing of the ceremony has been announced, the graduates will rise and face towards the centre aisle. Each row will file out accordingly, starting from the last rows.
